At Monkbar Pharmacy, we’re proud to support the NHS Hypertension Case-Finding Service, offering free blood pressure checks to help detect early signs of high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults.
Why Is This Important?
High blood pressure often has no symptoms, yet it’s one of the biggest risk factors for heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Early detection and management can significantly reduce your risk of serious health complications.
Did you know that up to 5 million people (1 in 9 of us) have high blood pressure without even knowing it?! That is a lot of us who could significantly reduce our risk of big health issues very simply if we knew!
High blood pressure is easily to identify, usually preventable AND it’s easily treatable so there’s no reason not to know.
Who Can Use This Service?
You can access this service if you are:
- Aged 40 years or over
- Not previously diagnosed with hypertension
- Registered with a GP in England
- No blood pressure check within the last 5yrs (you could still be eligible if you have had any significant lifestyle changes since your last check)
- Aged 35-39yrs with a family history or one or more risk factors for hypertension (i.e. obesity, very stressful lifestyle)
We also offer ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) if your initial reading is elevated. This gives a more accurate picture of your blood pressure over 7-24 hours.
Not eligible for the NHS blood pressure check? – Do NOT worry. You can book in for a private Health Check where we will take your blood pressure and assess whether you are a healthy weight. Click here for more information.
What Happens During the NHS Blood Pressure Check?
- Initial Consultation: A trained member of our pharmacy team will ask a few quick questions about your health and lifestyle.
- Blood Pressure Measurement: We’ll take a quick and painless blood pressure reading in a private consultation room.
- Further Testing (if needed): If your reading is high, we may offer 7-24-hour ABPM to monitor your blood pressure more accurately.
- Results & Referral: We’ll explain your results clearly and, if necessary, refer you to your GP for further support. We will also chat to you about small and manageable changes you can make to keep your heart healthy and provide you with resources that suit YOU.
